In the 2017 Android OS update Google introduced a feature that tracks users' physical activity with phone sensors.

Description

With an OS update in 2017 Google introduced a new feature, called "activity recognition". That feature may track user's physical activity (biking, running, standing still) using phone’s built-in sensors Surveillance and share it with third-party apps.

SoundHound and Shazam both appear to be using the permission, though it’s unclear why.
