Description

The State of California passed a new bill called Assembly Bill 173, which lets researchers the private info of those who buy guns. This law groups together a lot of personal data (Aggregation) and could let these researchers figure out private details about gun owners (Identification). The big worry is that this info was only meant for the government to check if someone should own a gun in the first place, but now it's being used for studies too, which opens the door to Secondary Use of the data. People are concerned that if this private info isn't kept really safe, it could accidentally be given out or stolen (Disclosure), which would be a big problem for gun owners who could possibly want to keep their info private. This issue can cause a lot of anxiety among gun owners and could possibly leave them feeling like they lost their privacy due to this new law. Most people are also worrying about the potential misuse of their personal data now.
